Tuesday: Citizens for Civil Rights, Film Screening

Greetings Friends,

We all worked together on getting the West Lafayette City Council to approve the resolution adding gender identity, gender expression, and veteran status to the groups that can file complaints with the West Lafayette Human Rights Commission, and it really takes all of us to promote and protect basic human rights for everyone.

As our state legislature gears up for its 2011 session, we hope you will continue to work with Citizens for Civil Rights on the injustices that still face us. We invite you to attend the regular meeting of Citizens for Civil Rights on Tuesday, October 26 at the Pride Lafayette Community Center (640 Main St. in Lafayette) at 7:00.

Part of Tuesday's meeting will be used for a screening of the 38-minute documentary film, Bullied. We're inviting organization leaders to attend this screening and help us plan a public screening of the film to be scheduled sometime soon.

We want the public screening to be the next event offered by our community, to continue the conversation around bullying and suicide. The conversation began with the October 7 forum hosted by Pride lafayette that was attended by 30 people. Please show your support for creating safe schools, free of harassment and violence, by attending the screening and helping us promote discussion in our local area.

The agenda for the short business part of the meeting will include:

1. CCR finances
2. Congratulations to the West Lafayette City Council
3. Planning our holiday event (Friday, December 3)
4. The Indiana Equality holiday event (Thursday, December 9)

Early Voting Starts in Tippecanoe County

Dear Friends --

It may seem hard to believe, but this midterm election is a crucial one for LGBT rights in Indiana. If one party controls all three parts of the state government, it's likely that there will be no effective opposition to issues that will directly affect our friends, our neighbors and our families.

Currently the Governor (Mitch Daniels) is Republican as well as the majority in the Indiana Senate. The Indiana House is in Demorcratic hands. Because of that, Indiana Equality and Citizens for Civil Rights have been able to stop or slow down a marriage discrimination amendment. We've been able to stop measures that would repeal our local ordinances which protect our jobs and housing. We even stopped a measure to require health teachers in Indiana to portray gay and lesbian lives as harmful to your health.

SO.... I implore you to make some wise decisions and get out and vote. Also we will lose the ability to vote in our current system in Tippecanoe County if the legislature doesn't renew our early voting/ vote sites. Let's show them we LIKE being able to vote when we can...and where it's most convenient. That means we have to turn out in LARGE NUMBERS.

You can vote any week day at the County Building from 10-4.

Starting Monday, OCT 18 -- there will be satellite sites across the county -- the full schedule can be found at

I'm going to plan to vote at Purdue on either OCT 19 or 20 in Stewart - under the mural - between 10-4.

So really.. there's NO reason NOT to vote.

There are federal offices (Senate and House District 4), State Offices - Secretary of State, Auditor, Treasurer, State Senate (Dist. 22) and House (Dist, 26 & 27) and county-wide offices like Clerk, Assessor, Sheriff and County Council. PFLAG stands for Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. PFLAG Lafayette/Tippecanoe County promotes the health and well-being of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons, their families and friends through: support, to cope with an adverse society; education, to enlighten an ill-informed public; and advocacy, to end discrimination and to secure equal civil rights. Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays provides opportunity for dialogue about sexual orientation and gender identity, and acts to create a society that is healthy and respectful of human diversity. PFLAG Lafayette/Tippecanoe County is the Lafayette, Indiana chapter of an international organization. PFLAG meets the first Thursday of the month from 6:30-8:00 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 333 Meridian in West Lafayette.

PFLAG Lafayette/Tippecanoe County, in conjunction with Pride Lafayette and Citizens for Civil Rights, oversees a local LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) youth group. Gay Rights Activist to be Featured at ACLU-Indiana Conference

There are many ways in which we can reciprocate for all that the ACLU-IN does for us. Here are two for your consideration:

1. The American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana (ACLU-Indiana) cordially invites you to the Annual Dinner to be held Saturday, October 16, 2010 at the IUPUI Campus Center - Division of Student Life, 4th Floor located at 420 University Boulevard, Indianapolis. The ACLU-Indiana Annual Dinner will begin at 6:00PM with a public reception, and dinner at 7:00PM.

The keynote speaker for the evening will be Claire Buffie, Miss New York, who is a 24-year-old Cum Laude graduate of Ball State University and an outspoken advocate of human rights. As an executive board member of PFLAG NYC (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) and a speaker in their Safe Schools Program, Claire has had the opportunity to speak to over 2,000 students in New York City public schools about respecting diversity, eliminating discriminatory vocabulary, and breaking the stereotype and stigma surrounding marginalized youth.

2. The American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana (ACLU-Indiana) Student Conference will be held Saturday, October 16, 2010 at the IU Law School in Inlow Hall. The Student Conference will kick-off at 8:00AM with registration and a continental breakfast in the Atrium.

The theme for this year's Conference is "The Life of Jane Addams." Jane Addams was a pioneering social worker, an outspoken women's suffragist, fervent anti-war protestor, founding member of the ACLU and NAACP, and first woman Nobel Peace Prize winner (1931). The Conference luncheon will feature a "Historical View of Jane Addams," and will explore her fascinating 18th century life.

The Student Conference will also offer several workshops to raise awareness of your rights and promote freedom. Special Guest, Claire Buffie, Ball State University graduate and current Miss New York, will host a discussion on "How Straight People Can Advance LGBT Rights." Other workshop topics include "Know Your Rights When Stopped By Police," "Social Networking and Privacy issues," "Religion in Schools" and much more. Luncheon speaker is Purdue Professor of History, Susan Curtis.

It will be an excellent opportunity to become more informed and equipped to move freedom forward. The conference will conclude at 4:30 PM.

Conference fee is $25/person, which includes a continental breakfast and a light lunch.

West Lafayette City Council Extends Civil Rights Protections

On Monday, October 4^th, the West Lafayette City Council extended nondiscrimination protections based on gender identity, gender expression and veterans' status. The measure sponsored by Council President Ann Hunt and Mayor John Dennis was approved five to two.

With this addition, West Lafayette joins Bloomington and Indianapolis in rejecting discrimination based on gender identity and expression as well as sexual orientation. Areas covered by the resolution include housing, employment and public accommodations. The change was proposed by the West Lafayette Human Relations Commission chaired by Charlie Shook.

West Lafayette HRC Chair Charlie Shook pointed out, "This was truly a community-wide effort. We had very strong support from Councilor Hunt and the Mayor from the beginning. This again affirms that West Lafayette is an inclusive, safe and diverse community. "

Citizens for Civil Rights Political Action Chair Randy Studt stated, "I applaud the city council on taking a firm stand on behalf of nondiscrimination for all. "

In addition to the hard work of the West Lafayette Human Relations Commission, this measure was supported by a coalition of Citizens for Civil Rights, Pride Lafayette, the Greater Lafayette Chapter of PFLAG, ACLU-Indiana Greater Lafayette Chapter and the Purdue Queer Student Union.

The West Lafayette City Council will hear a resolution proposed by the WL Human Relations Commission to add gender identity, gender expression and veterans' status to the city's nondiscrimination resolution. This would add West Lafayette to Bloomington and Indianapolis as the only cities in Indiana to cover these categories against discrimination in housing, employment and public accommodations.

Citizens for Civil Rights and LGBT Leaders across the Greater Lafayette area urge you to be present at this meeting to show your support for those councilors who are supporting this measure. The West Lafayette Human Relations Commission, chaired by Charlie Shook, has worked hard to convince councilors and educate the public on this addition.

CCR and the WLHRC have lined up many supporters to speak in favor of the measure, including local trans activists, religious leaders, students and representatives of Pride Lafayette, PFLAG and Purdue Queer Student Union.

It is possible that there may be vocal opposition to changing this resolution. If there is, we remind all of our supporters to remember to be polite, act and dress professionally and show respect, even if there are untruths and slanderous statements made by opposition speakers. It always benefits our case when we can stand toe to toe with those who would deny rights and protections without becoming disagreeable.

Again, it's key to pack the hall – come out and watch history be made in West Lafayette on Monday night.

Screening of 'Out in the Silence' and panel discussion at West Lafayette Public Library Sept. 22nd

What: 'Out in the Silence' is a documentary film that tells the story of a handful of small-town residents struggling for inclusion amidst vehement anti-gay sentiment. The showing will be followed by a panel discussion.

When: Wednesday, September 22, 6:00-7:30 p.m.

Where: West Lafayette Public Library

Free and open to the public.

The panel will be moderated by Randy Studt of Indiana Equality, with panelists Ashley Smith, VP of Pride Lafayette and Rick McKinniss, former paralegal/volunteer coordinator for Indiana Legal Services.

Film synopsis:

The announcement of filmmaker Joe Wilson's wedding to another man ignites a firestorm of controversy and a quest for change in the small Pennsylvania hometown he left long ago. Drawn back by a plea for help from the mother of a gay teen being tormented at school, Wilson takes viewers on an exhilarating journey through love, hate, and understanding in rural America.

Over the next four years Wilson navigates the ins and outs of being different in a conservative small town. He makes an unexpected friendship with an evangelical pastor that demonstrates the understanding that can develop when people on different sides of an issue lay down their swords and get to know one another. And he helps a lesbian couple renovate an historic downtown theatre that could catalyze the town's economic revitalization – if the community will accept them.

The greatest change occurs in Wilson himself as he realizes that while maverick acts such as the publication of his wedding announcement can create a splash, creating lasting change in small towns takes the courage and ongoing commitment of local folks to speak out and live openly.

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

As Americans, it is our birthright that all people are created equal and deserve the same rights, privileges, and opportunities. Since our earliest days of independence, our Nation has striven to fulfill that promise. An important chapter in our great, unfinished story is the movement for fairness and equality on behalf of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. This month, as we recognize the immeasurable contributions of LGBT Americans, we renew our commitment to the struggle for equal rights for LGBT Americans and to ending prejudice and injustice wherever it exists.

LGBT Americans have enriched and strengthened the fabric of our national life. From business leaders and professors to athletes and first responders, LGBT individuals have achieved success and prominence in every discipline. They are our mothers and fathers, our sons and daughters, and our friends and neighbors. Across my Administration, openly LGBT employees are serving at every level. Thanks to those who came before us -- the brave men and women who marched, stood up to injustice, and brought change through acts of compassion or defiance -- we have made enormous progress and continue to strive for a more perfect union.

My Administration has advanced our journey by signing into law the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr., Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which strengthens Federal protections against crimes based on gender identity or sexual orientation. We renewed the Ryan White CARE Act, which provides life-saving medical services and support to Americans living with HIV/AIDS, and finally eliminated the HIV entry ban. I also signed a Presidential Memorandum directing hospitals receiving Medicare and Medicaid funds to give LGBT patients the compassion and security they deserve in their time of need, including the ability to choose someone other than an immediate family member to visit them and make medical decisions.

In other areas, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced a series of proposals to ensure core housing programs are open to everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. HUD also announced the first-ever national study of discrimination against members of the LGBT community in the rental and sale of housing. Additionally, the Department of Health and Human Services has created a National Resource Center for LGBT Elders.

Much work remains to fulfill our Nation's promise of equal justice under law for LGBT Americans. That is why we must give committed gay couples the same rights and responsibilities afforded to any married couple, and repeal the Defense of Marriage Act. We must protect the rights of LGBT families by securing their adoption rights, ending employment discrimination against LGBT Americans, and ensuring Federal employees receive equal benefits. We must create safer schools so all our children may learn in a supportive environment. I am also committed to ending "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" so patriotic LGBT Americans can serve openly in our military, and I am working with the Congress and our military leadership to accomplish that goal.

As we honor the LGBT Americans who have given so much to our Nation, let us remember that if one of us is unable to realize full equality, we all fall short of our founding principles. Our Nation draws its strength from our diversity, with each of us contributing to the greater whole. By affirming these rights and values, each American benefits from the further advancement of liberty and justice for all.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2010 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month. A Pay What You Can Event

Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette announces a world premiere reading of Tilt by
local playwright Laurie Russell. This marks the 3rd year of world premiere
readings as part of the Civic Theatre Staged Reading Series. In the three years
the Staged Reading Series has been part of Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette,
at least one original script written by a local playwright has been produced
each season.

Michael Hayden has come home to the Midwest for a special occasion: not only is
it Thanksgiving, but he will be coming out to his family with his boyfriend
alongside for support. This comedy explores different reactions from members of
his family to his announcement. From his slightly crazy grandmother to his
disapproving brother-in-law to his angry younger brother, Michael learns that
it's not easy to let the family in on his secret. Anyone who's ever had to face
up to their family for any reason will relate to this story and be reminded that
all families are dysfunctional in one way or another. By the end of the play,
however, we are shown how strong a family's love can be.

Director Julia Colby has announced the cast for Tilt, the fourth staged reading
of the 2009-2010 Staged Reading Series at Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette.
The cast includes:

Fort Wayne City Councilor Plans to Introduce Gender Identity/Expression Ordinance to Local Human Rights Ordinance

We Need You to Show Your Support!

On March 9th, Fort Wayne City Councilor Karen Goldner will introduce an ordinance to add 'Gender Identity/Expression' to the local human rights ordinance as one of its protected classes. Opposition has come from the American Family Association of Indiana and the Indiana Family Institute, providing false and distorted information about transgender people played a major factor in delaying Goldner's efforts.

The Fort Wayne City Council needs to know that:

You support this proposal that will help ensure that transgender individuals have equal access to the opportunity to make a living and to support themselves; providing protections against discrimination in employment, education, public accommodations and housing
Education, not fear, is the key to teaching others about gender identity. Groups in opposition to this ordinance use messages aimed to stimulate fear of transgender people by using untrue accusations or implications that transgender people are sexual predators, conjuring absurd scenarios involving bathroom and locker room encounters between innocent young girls and cross-dressing men
This ordinance will not lead to an onslaught of frivolous lawsuits and there are no cases of that occurring in other jurisdictions.

Marriage Discrimination Amendment Dies in State Legislature

Senate Joint Resolution 13, the Marriage Discrimination Amendment, has died in the Indiana State House.

Due in large part to your support and actions, the proposal to amend Indiana’s state constitution was stopped when the Indiana House of Representatives did not conduct a hearing on this discriminatory proposal. Friends of fairness and equality generated nearly 15,000 e-mails and letters to State Legislators urging them to reject SJR-13.

The Marriage Discrimination Amendment was advocated by Advance America, the American Family Association of Indiana, and the Indiana Family Institute. Even though Indiana has passed the Defense of Marriage Act in 1997, a law that has been upheld by Indiana courts, these organizations pushed for enactment of an unnecessary and discriminatory amendment. These proponents conducted press conferences, organized State House gatherings, and targeted legislative leadership with e-mail and letter campaigns. And none of it worked!

A tremendous thank you is due to all who joined in this battle - the coalition members of Indiana Equality Action, corporate and academic allies, clergy from around the state, legal experts, organized labor, media outlets, and bloggers – each made invaluable contributions. These friends of equality have ensured that discrimination and hate were not permanently embedded into our great state constitution.

Did you know we've had a local chapter of PFLAG right here in Lafayette for many years? The local chapter, PFLAG Lafayette/Tippecanoe County is coordinated by Meredith Richmond and Margy Deverall.

Without PFLAG, many families and friends in our community would have gone without the caring support they needed to understand and cope with the issues around having a gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender family member or friend. We need PFLAG in our community, and they need our support now more than ever!

I attended the monthly PFLAG meeting on Thursday and was reminded of how critical their work is for our community. Did you know that PFLAG coordates the PRYSM youth group? Their regular gatherings of around 5-15 youth of all ages (some as young as 13!) have provided those youth with a safe space to share their feelings and receive peer and adult support related to their sexual orientation or gender identity.

The PRYSM youth group has experienced a severe shortage of adult volunteers in recent years. If you or someone you know might be able to donate your time to assist with the group, please contact Margy and Meredith by sending an email to:

The above address can also be used to express your general interest in volunteering for PFLAG. After all, youth aren't the only ones in need of support. Rightwing Advance America Poll - misrepresentations again!

Dear Friends!

I am sending this link along to you so you can check for yourself how the State House of Representatives might vote had they the chance to do so on SJR13. Note this is a Rightwing Advance America poll based on a letter they sent to all House members last week.

There are a number of MISrepresentations here - namely, the majority of Democrats did not respond - and were nevertheless recorded as negative votes instead of NOT answering. Note the clever wording of the NO section -

"Representative did not state they would vote for SJR 13 to protect marriage between one man and one woman and ban same sex civil unions."

I know that there would have a been a few DEM votes for SJR 13 - like Peggy Welch of Monroe County - but they record it against her, because she did not respond.

Buyer retirement -- means....

The State Senator Brandt Hershman, current Majority Whip in the Senate and the author and pusher of the first Marriage Discrimination Amendment, is in line to take his place. His "real job" for years has been Buyer's in-district assistant -- so he likely lined up the Republican support before Buyer announced. This district is so red it even went 50+% for McCain and well over 69% for Bush.

Perennial Democrat David Sanders had already announced to run against Buyer. If Hershman runs, that also opens a seat in the State Senate - assuming he were to win.

Indiana's Marriage Discrimination Amendment, Senate Joint Resolution 13 (SJR-13) authored by Senator Carlin Yoder passed the Indiana State Senate by a vote of 38 to 10 today, Thursday, January 28, 2010.
Leading the Senate opposition to SJR-13, Senators Vi Simpson (Bloomington) and Tim Lanane (Anderson) stated clearly that the Marriage Discrimination Amendment threatens Indiana's economic recovery and distracts from the real issues facing Hoosiers.
The amendment will moves now to the House of Representatives where similar proposals – House Joint Resolutions 5 and 7 (HJR-5 & HJR-7) were filed by Representatives Bill Davis and Eric Turner.
"The Marriage Discrimination Amendment violates every Hoosier's basic right to fairness and equality. It's just an attempt to distract Hoosiers from the greater issues facing Indiana, threatening our state's current and future economic development" stated Indiana Equality Action President Randy Studt.

Marriage Discrimination Amendment an attempt to distract Hoosiers from the greater issues at hand

The future of Indiana’s economic health and viability is the most important issue facing all Indiana families, declared leaders and allies of Indiana’s gay and transgender communities in a press conference held earlier this morning by Indiana Equality Action (IE Action) while the Indiana Senate contemplates the adoption of a marriage discrimination amendment to Indiana’s constitution.

“We are greatly disappointed that some members of the General Assembly have decided to endorse an amendment that would forever write discrimination into the Indiana Constitution,” stated Don Sherfick of Indiana Equality Action. “Indiana is facing a crippling recession, high unemployment, diminishing job prospects, a significant budget deficit and serious threats to Indiana’s public education system and social services programs. A discriminatory constitutional amendment appears to be nothing more than a highly divisive political ploy, distracting Indiana from focusing on our state’s real problems.”

While the Marriage Discrimination Amendment passed the Senate Judiciary Committee January 20th, 2010, the full Senate has not taken a final vote on the proposal. It is urgent that you contact your Senator if you have not already done so and tell them to vote NO on SJR-13, the Marriage Discrimination Amendment.

“Hoosiers across the state are already suffering from a battered economy. Our elected legislators should concern themselves with solutions to get people back to work and not passing legislation that would dampen Indiana’s recovery from the current recession” commented Josephine Hughes speaking on behalf of the National Association of Social Workers. Explaining that any distraction from the state’s stark economic situation is damaging to Hoosier families, Hughes continued “Instead of offering solutions to the real problems Indiana families are facing, proponents of Senate Joint Resolution 13 are taking time on an unnecessary and damaging amendment to our Constitution, infringing on people’s human dignity.”

“Equality and fairness are Hoosier values” noted the Reverend Kevin Armstrong, Senior Pastor of North United Methodist Church and representative of the Interfaith Coalition on Nondiscrimination. “Discrimination of any kind should not be tolerated and certainly has no place in our state’s Constitution.”

If approved by the Senate the Marriage Discrimination Amendment will move to the Indiana House of Representatives.

On February 15th Indiana Equality Action will be providing a crash course in techniques for you to successfully communicate with and educate your State legislators. There will also be a panel at lunch to discuss legislation and answer your questions. Marriage Discrimination Amendment passes Second Reading in Senate

Dear Friends,

Yesterday the Indiana Marriage Amendment (SJR 13) passed the full Senate on second reading (no recorded vote was taken). It looks like Thursday or Friday could bring 3rd reading and a final vote on the bill, sending it to the Indiana House of Representatives where Speaker Pat Bauer(D) has continually blocked its passage.

It's crucial that you call your Senator (Alting or Hershman) today - 1-800-382-9467 and tell him to vote NO on SJR13.

And while you're at it, call your state Representative -- either Randy Truitt, Sheila Klinker or Dr. Brown and tell them to keep their focus on the budget and jobs --- vote NO on SJR 13. 800-382-9842.

The monthly meeting of Citizens forCivil Rights is open to the public. All persons interested in civil rights, particularly civil rights for local LGBT individuals, are invited to attend. Typically, our meetings occur on the 4th Tuesday of each month. This month, however, we've moved the meeting to Thursday, January 28th at 6PM. This coincides with the CCR Coffee Talk that will follow at 7PM (details to come).

Certain to be on the agenda for this month will be the Marriage Discrimination Amendment that could potentially write discrimination into our state constitution.

Both events will occur at the Pride Lafayette Community Center, 640 Main St., Lafayette.

Breaking Legislative News- Amendment to go to Full Senate

SJR-13 - Marriage Discrimination Amendment Moves to Full Senate

This morning, Wednesday, January 20, 2010, the Indiana Senate Judiciary Committee passed Senate Joint Resolution 13 (SJR-13) by a vote of 6 to 4. Approving the bill were Senators Bray, Zakas, Head, Holman, Schneider, and Steele. Voting no were Senators Lanane, Randolph, Taylor, and Broden. Senator Alting was not in the room for the vote. The Marriage Discrimination Amendment is now eligible for consideration by the full Senate.

So called "pro-family" organizations like Advance America, the Indiana Family Institute and the American Family Association of Indiana are keeping the pressure on Indiana legislators to advance this harmful proposal. It is not time to rest - we need to keep our own pressure going to stop this legislation.

Passage of SJR-13 by the Indiana Senate will keep this harmful proposal in play and set the stage for a possible ballot initiative. If approved by the electorate, SJR-13 will forever write discrimination into the Indiana Constitution, affecting thousands of Hoosier families.
